Interconnected smoke detectors problem

I currently have a pair of First Alert 3120B's connected to each other with the red/orange wire with about 30ft of 14 gauge wire.

When I connected one of them to AC power, the other one went off with a test and I thought that was it, I got them to work. I proceeded to do a real test with smoke, so I smoked one of them, it went off BUT the other one does nothing, it acts as if they are not connected together at all.

I have gone through 4 different ones and they are all the same, I really don't understand what is wrong. Works like a charm by themselves but I want that interconnect to work.

Solid green light on both detectors mean AC power, batteries are in and test just fine by themselves. Do my smoke detectors just not like each other?

AC power is provided with spliced electrical plugs, plugged into outlets since I live in an apartment I can't go into walls/ceilings.
