Sump basin question

Hi

I'm in the process of installing a sump pit in the basement. I was doing some research and some people say to wrap a filter fabric around the basin. I also read where some just put the basin in the pit with out the fabric. My question is, is the fabric necessary around the basin? My biggest concern is that it will clog from all the silt. They use the fabric that prevents weeds from growing. What your opinion? Your help is greatly appreciated.
