Craftsman riding mower blowing smoke

Engine is a 17.5HP OHV. This lawnmower will start up and idle fine for about 30seconds and then it almost dies, and blows a ton of smoke out. It will repeat this cycle over and over again. At first I was thinking it needed new rings because it has greatly reduced power since it started running this way but the fact that it can run normal at startup everytime makes me think it may be a simpler fuel related issue. Anyone have any experience with this problem in the past?
