I apologize if this isn't posted in the correct area, but I wasn't sure where to post this.
My husband and I are going to have the carpet replaced on our stairs. There was no skirting installed by the home builders or any of the owners since then. When pulling up the old carpet, I see that there is a gap between the wall and every riser and tread. The gap is barely 1/2" at some points and a little over an inch at some areas!
For "skirting" they had cut individual pieces of pine boards into triangle shapes and had them just setting on top of the carpet on each tread and they had topped it off with quarter round. Most of the triangular pieces were just nailed into the drywall and very easily came off the wall. Absolutely shoddy work and it's always been ugly as can be.
Anyway, I don't want to replace those ugly triangular "skirting" pieces after the new carpet is put down, so what do I need to do to make it look nice without breaking our budget (we are planning on selling very soon)?
I can do MANY DIY projects, but I am kind of at a loss of how to start this one. Do I need to create new skirting from lumber myself and how should it fit on the wall? I'm not sure if it needs to sit level with the risers and treads or should I try sliding the wood (new skirting) down into the gap? That would be hard to do since it would be hard to get it down into those areas with a narrow gap. I am just not sure if this needs to be done before or after the carpeting is put in and if I have to do work before they come to put in carpet I want to make sure that whatever I do won't create problems for them putting in the new carpet. BTW, the stairs are just your basic waterfall style, no bullnose or anything like that.
Please help! Thank you.
