I installed a new frost proof wall hydrant with a built in vacuum breaker last summer since we converted the house plumbing to PEX and I removed and stored the garden hose for winter .Now I hookup the hose with the nozzle on the end and water keeps pouring out of the vacuum breaker. So I remove the hose and open the faucet and it was still leaking from the vacuum breaker even without a hose attachment connected. So I couldn't buy just the vacuum repait kit, home depot canada did not stock it, so I bought a new hydrant and remove the vacuum breaker and installed it. Still leaking, so then I open the metal cap on top and tightened down the plastic vacuum breaker with channel locks and it stopped leaking. So after I reattached the hose with the nozzle and turned the water on and water came out of the vacuum breaker again. I am not sure what to do, why would the vacuum breaker leak with all new parts? The vacuum breaker is plastic so I tightened it as much as I can without snapping it off, Should the metal cap on top be real tight?
Can internal parts of the hydrant cause the vacuum breaker to leak? Since the leak is coming from the vacuum breaker I haven't tried to tighten down the cartridge.
The wall hydrant I have looks exactly like this one except it has a pex connection on the end:
