In anticipation of another season of not having enough daylight to complete mowing my yard, I want to add a pair of 12vdc/10watt LED flood lights to my mower. The set I’m interested in using are nearly identical to the set I have installed on my motorcycle, and the pair will pull about 2 amps.
My mower is an older (at least 18 years old) commercial grade Snapper, 52” deck walk behind with a 16hp B&S Vangard twin. The engine is a pull start and does not have a battery. It does however have a 12v electronic clutch. I will add that although it's probably 20+ years old, it starts 1st pull every time and runs like a champ.
My thought is to install a battery to act as a load buffer, run a wire off the voltage regulator to the battery (to keep it charged) and then run the new lights off the battery.
The questions are:
-Can this be done?
-Will I have to install a diode or an additional regulator inline between the voltage regulator and the battery?
-Will I risk cooking the existing voltage regulator?
-Is this a stupid idea and I should just run the lights off a spare M/C battery and that I’ll have to recharge after each use?
Thanks in advance.
