cracks in drywall joints

I added an addition to our house about 10 years ago and ever since I've had problems with the ceiling and outer corner joints cracking. I put new drywall compound in the cracks and eventually they crack again. It's pretty unsightly to me. I almost want to cover the ceiling with wood panels or something just so I don't have to deal with it anymore!
