The mortar at the base of the chimney is cracked and has fallen out where the masonry meets the flue tiles. I haven't used the fireplace for a while because of the danger of sending flames, heat, and gasses up the outside the flue and have therefore blocked it with a chimney pillow. The fireplace consists of a metal heatilator with about two to three feet of brick above that gradually taper to join the flue. It's right at this point the defects appear.
This location is physically inaccessible, short of dismantling the whole fireplace, and the tapered vault above would seem to make it impossible to somehow attach a flue liner to the firebox. I'm wondering if there is a heat resistant foam or filler that could be applied with some sort of wand or gun. Or if anyone has some other solution, I welcome it. :Peeping On U2:
