My cottage has a basement that was added in about 1972. I've only owned it 2 years so there's plenty of history I'm not aware of. The utility room has vinyl on the floor and I've always felt a low spot near the door that might be a drain.
This came in handy during a hard rain yesterday when water started running down the corner of the basement wall (due to some unfinished garage addition work). I took out my pocket knife and cut away the vinyl to reveal a drain cover. The water flowed in and things were peachy until I lifted off the cover to see if the drain needed cleaning.
What I found was just a hole into the sand under the floor. Was this common and acceptable "back in the day"?
Is this a floor "drain"?
