Laundry Hook Up from water heater

I am trying to move Laundry washer and dryer and bring it near to water heater on the sideways, not front.

Can it make T connection from the plumbing pipes coming into the water heater i.e. cold pipe coming in and hot pipe going out. Just make a T connection and add a feet or so of pipe and then close off with a connection which will connect to the washer's hoses.

Will it be right way to do it or there are some codes involved etc.
