Recessed lighting Romex connectors

I am installing 6" recessed can lights in my unfinished basement. They are Commercial Electric brand from Home Depot. Do I have to use the Romex connector "clamps" on each light to pass code? As of right now, I have just been popping out the tabs on the end of the junction boxes and running the wires through these, not the round knockouts. There is a little metal clip that holds the wire in place under the tab that I knock out. However, I am getting this inspected and want to know if I should be using the round knockouts and Romex connectors to pass the inspection.
