Very narrow powder room

i have a 1929 house and it has a powder room tucked beside the stairs. The space is VERY narrow, like 30-36". So narrow, in fact that your knees hit the wall when sitting on the toilet. Would it be acceptable to rotate the toilet so that it is against the back wall, facing the door (long ways in the room)? I think that ascetically it is bad, but would be much more functional than riding the porcelain throne side saddle, like we were doing.
