Squealing Heat Pump

I read a bunch of threads about where people's heat pump's are squealing when they turn on the AC. Mine was doing it with the heater. Any ideas? I turned it off and forgot about it, but am now afraid to use my AC, could it leak anything? The noise sounded like the old aol dial up, when you were trying to connect to the internet.
