Oil Burner stuttering after running for a few minutes

Hello All,

First I am brand new here and hope to be able to contribute to the community. But of course I am here because of a problem I am having currently.

I have an oil fired boiler with baseboard hot water heating, there is no domestic hot water (coil is installed but disconnected).

Boiler fires properly, shuts down properly and is giving heat. The problem I am having is after a few minutes into the cycle the boiler stutters like the flame is going to shut off and then back on, it does it very quickly and never loses the flame. It stutters like this for about 3 times and then continues on with the heat cycle until it reaches the 180 degree temp to shut off.

I have checked the cad light sensor and it is clean and seems to be fine. I haven't done anything else yet.

What are your thoughts?

Thank you all...

GE Simon XT Alarm

Hi Everyone,

I am new to the forum and searching for some answers on my alarm system. I bought a GE Simon XT Alarm about 3 years ago from Devcon Alarms. The idiot installer installed my wireless cellular alarm in the basement and guaranteed that we would hear. Long story short, it was a year later that we tripped the alarm and realized that we couldn't hear it in it's current location. Anyways, I have exhausted calling my security provider (now monotronics) to get them to come move the GSM module and/or add a second module without them charging me $150 just to come and look at it. This is ridiculous.

Anyways, I have found several GSM modules for this system online and all I want to do is add a second GSM module upstairs in the master bedroom. However, I can't determine if this is even possible. I know there is a remote out there that can be added, but I want something will the full alarm that would wake me up a night if tripped. I would prefer it to also have GSM capability to act as a backup to the main unit. Can someone tell me if this is even possible and/or other options I might have in my situation.

The worst part is I have 1 year left on my contract and I can't get rid of the crappy company without paying to do so. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Duct clearences

I am building a soffit in my finished basement around ductwork that was just installed, What is the closest to drywall and wood I can get with the ductwork. I know that the ductwork shouldn't make contact with any surfaces due to making noises. This ductwork is for a heat pump/ac system. Also attached to it will be a hotblast wood furnace that will sit about 10' away from the supply plenum.

Plan is to fir out the bottom with 1x3 and then attach 1/4 drywall, I don't have much room so I have to keep it as short as possible.

Suggestions for a first time tiler? Tiling my shower.

I'm using 12x9 tiles for the wall and 2x2 for the floor, and I have no idea where to start. Are there any articles or anything or just general advice you have for where to start and layout? I have a 14" tile cutter (not the electric kind); would that be enough, or do I have to get an electrical saw as well?

Thanks for any suggestions!

Heat Pump and Supplimental Heat

I have a house that has 2 heat pumps, one for upstairs and one for down stairs. This past summer we had the whole upstairs system replace with a high efficiency unit. During this cold snap, it is running beautifully.

The downstairs unit is a 14 years old, 8 seer unit. This past week it has struggled to keep up with the cold weather. While our temperatures last night pale in comparison to other parts of the country, our buildings are not as well equipped to handle such low temperatures (5 degrees). Came down this morning and it was in the 60's down, while a toasty 70 upstairs. I have been monitoring the temps coming out of the vents downstairs at 72 degrees. Nudged up the thermostat early to no avail. I just went over and switched it to supplemental heat and suddenly, I get 100 degrees coming out of the register and the house is heating back up fast. Usual temp out of the register in my office is 80 degrees.

Isn't the thermostat supposed to automatically call for emergency heat if demand can not be met from normal operations. In the past, if we needed it a little more hot, as soon as you pushed the thermostat up, the emergency heat light would come on. I'm thinking the thermostat is wired wrong.

When the new unit was installed this summer, the assistant tech installed the new thermostat in the downstairs hallway instead of upstairs hallway. He had to remove, switch and re-install the old one downstairs. Can it be wired incorrectly that it doesn't call for emerg. heat?

Basement water pipe burst - antimicrobial ?

Well it has been a cold week and unfortunately one of my pipes burst in the basement, leading to a very soaked carpet. At present the carpet, padding, and base boards have been removed so that I could put some fans and a dehumidifier in the basement. My question is, do I need to put an anti-microbial spray/powder down onto the concrete (will mold grow on concrete?)? The carpet and padding are being thrown out, and having a new one installed. Thank you for any input.
