Another mini split post.

Hi all,

We've been without AC in our newly finished basement room for about a year and are considering a mini split heat pump system. We live in a 1100 sq. ft (upstairs) rancher (2X4 walls 1950's construction, old windows) in SE PA and have been using just a 15K wall air conditioner for the upstairs for years. We have oil baseboard heat upstairs and we run a pellet stove in the basement. We got proposals for a Mitsubishi ductless heat pump system utilizing a 30K Btu condenser with 12K room unit in the finished portion of the basement 700 sq.ft. and 2 identical 9K r.u. for each end of the house ( one unit in the m.b. facing the hall and the other on the l.r. kitch. border).

We are not real air conditioner people. We like to open up when we can. We usually run our wall unit on a very low setting to primarily get humidity out of the air on nasty days. The downstairs is important to us because of the humidity. We've always run a dehumidifier down there. The real question is will running on an economical setting downstairs ( higher temp) allow enough dehumidification in this SE PA basement room. The finished part of the basement is well insulated on the outside perimeter walls but no insulation on inner walls to the unfinished portion. Also would you expect a significant electric cost running this unit over a stand alone dehumidifier downstairs and the big wall unit upstairs as we have been doing. I know there is a lot of variables here but any input is appreciated as I don't want my wife to be disappointed after spending about 10K. Also we have ceiling fans in every room and the heating portion is viewed by us as just a bonus since we have 2 other means of heating. I'm also leery of hearing salesman answers to these questions as they have a vested interest. Thanks ahead.

Another mini split post.
