Question about shark bite ball valves

The main shut off valve no longer shuts the water flow off. I bought one of those new 1/2" shark bite ball valves. My question is; how pristine does the surface of the pipe need to be that goes into the new fitting?

While painting the basement with Thoroseal to seal out the water I got the stuff all over the pipe. At the time it didn't seem like a big deal, now I'm kicking myself!! I tried knocking the stuff off but ended up banging the pipe up in the process. I can't just replace the pipe cause it's a sweat fitting at the elbow and I'll never get all of the water out of the pipe. I do have a tool that I can shut the water off at the road but even that doesn't completely shut the flow off. I know it should but it doesn't. I know cause I did it over the weekend so I could replace a kitchen faucet. I still had a slow trickle. I just threw down some towels and hustled.
I've added some picture, hope they help. I circled the section I can cut out and still have enough pipe to have 7/8" to put into each end of the fitting. Does it matter if the sides of the pipe have minor nicks in them as long as there are no burs on the part that seats the valve??
Another question is how do I cut that pipe section out. I have a pipe cutter but the pipe sits too close to the wall to use it.
