What is the best technique to cut the cabinet down to lessen its height?
I have purchased three of these cabinets to create a custom work space for our den. It will consist of two 15" base cabinets on each end and one 36" base cabinet in the center to hide two pcs and a media server, while creating two work spaces. I have also purchased a custom counter top to be placed on top of the bases for the surface.
The reason for all of this instead of buying a simple desk:
We have a custom oak wall unit in our den and these cabinets are a very close match of the existing cabinetry. We felt that using cabinets that matched the wall unit will tie the room in together giving a high end look while also hiding all of my pc hardware. (my significant other is not a fan of tech) May I add at a fraction of the price of having another custom unit built.
Our issue lies in the height of the cabinets, desks are rarely over 30" high from the research I have done. These base cabinets are 35" high, the counter tops are also 2" high so we are looking at a total of 37"+ inches high.
Obviously that is too high to be comfortable to use, which defeats the point of creating a custom desk work space. I was planning to remove the kick plates to lower the unit. To do so I would have to cut the veneer side panels...
Cutting the veneer is my biggest concern as I don't want to damage it to badly during the process. I was planning to use a fine blade on either a circular saw or a jig saw and create a wood guide that I could clamp onto the cabinet to support and protect the veneer edge. Could anyone provide any tips or suggestions how I would best attack this project?
